·         Asking the business directly for a refund or adjustment.  That works some of the time.  But more and more these days, it doesn’t.  As just one example of how bad things are getting, The Federal Trade Commission reports consumer fraud complaints doubled last year, from the previous year. 

Meanwhile, businesses are setting up policies making it harder and harder for us consumers to even have a right to ask for a refund.  So asking the business directly is not usually an effective strategy to get your money back or have a fair accommodation made.

·         Filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.  The BBB is a private organization that logs complaints and passes them on to businesses that are members.  The BBB also makes these complaints available for public viewing. 

While filing a complaint with the BBB is a good way of warning other people (who check first with the BBB) about the business you’re having trouble with, it’s by no means a sure thing that you’ll get any satisfaction this way.  They have no enforcement power, so a business can simply choose to ignore the BBB, and your refund request.

·         Going to Small Claims Court.  This is a good idea in theory, because Small Claims Court was set up to protect the consumer and others in disputes where problems can be resolved without your having to hire a lawyer. 

The problem with Small Claims Court is that the business you’re having a dispute with has almost certainly been there many times before.  The business you’re thinking of taking to Small Claims Court has perfected the policies and contracts it used when you originally made your purchase, so it will be nearly “bullet proof” if you should end up in Court. 
Your chances of winning in that situation are slim to none. 

What that means is no matter which conventional approach you use the likely outcome is a rejection of your request.
